The Vanadzor Technology Centre together with the Enterprise Incubator Foundation, State Tourism Committee and Lori regional administration are organising a second Hackathon on ‘Innovative ideas for tourism development in Armenia’, taking place with support from EU4Business in Vanadzor on 18-19 May 2019.

The Hackathon is supported by the EU4 Business ‘Support to SME Development in Armenia’ (SMEDA) project, which is co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by GIZ’s Private Sector Development in the South Caucasus Programme.

The Hackathon aims to promote the tourism industry in Armenia, bringing innovative solutions and services to the market, which will be more attractive for tourists and will ensure more income for implementers.

The event’s objective to develop tourism in the northern regions by promoting digital and tech-based innovations is in line with the government’s focus of the digital economy and tourism as priority economic sectors.

Digital and technological approaches and solutions can deal with a wide range of topics such as visitor management, natural and cultural sights management (including museums), adventure and outdoor sports, cross-border cooperation, open data, e-learning software for visitors and professionals, apps, platforms, booking systems, digital experiences as well as tech-driven physical tourism related products, to name just a few.

Organisers will accept applications with ideas that have a clear implementation plan, with a budget that does not exceed 15,000,000 AMD.

Thirty teams from all over Armenia will be selected based on the criteria set by organisers. The maximum number of team members is 4.

Teams will be working on the prototypes of their ideas/products for 24 hours and will submit for the jury’s decision.

Jury members will include the best professionals in the field.

Prizes of 2,000,000 AMD, 1,200,000 AMD and 750,000 AMD are offered for the winners of the Hackathon. The prizes will be granted as professional services for development of the proposed product, such as marketing expenses or translation or study trip to Europe.

The EU4Business SMEDA project supports the improvement of the business and investment climate for SMEs in Armenia. It aims to strengthen the private sector, support SME coordination mechanisms, and foster links between research institutions and the private sector, as well as providing access to finance for SMEs.
