05/10/2017

It is in the clear interest of the EU and the Eastern Partnership (EaP) partner countries to cooperate closely in digital matters.

This way, 75 million consumers in EaP countries will also benefit from the EU’s Digital Single Market, creating which is one of the European Commission’s priorities for the coming years.

On 5 October 2017, the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in Partnership with the European Commission is hosting a special meeting under the six-month Estonian Presidency of the European Council, to see how the EaP countries are getting on in adopting digital solutions in their economies.

The meeting will be attended by Ministers from the six EaP countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and from EU member States, representatives of professional associations, relevant regulatory authorities, the Civil Society Forum, International Financial Institutions and Research & Education Networks.

The aim is to:

  • reflect upon the progress made since 2015, when the declaration of the 1st EaP Ministerial Meeting on the Digital Economy was signed
  • discuss future plans for 2020, including concrete targets and deliverables that will impact on the lives of citizens and the competitiveness of businesses, and
  • adopt a new declaration providing the necessary political momentum for digital cooperation and a strong message for the 5th EaP Summit in Brussels on 24 November 2017.
